Special features to look for in your new carpet

Are you looking to replace that old, worn, cheap carpet to bring your home to life?  There are many considerations to make when choosing new carpet, so our affordable carpet specialists at Bay Carpet  have put together this article to help you better understand the features to look for in carpet at your local carpet store.

Carpet is made from fibers of an assortment of materials.  Here are some of the most common:

1. Nylon

  • This is the most commonly used carpet fiber in the United States, because it is the most durable and can be cleaned easily and effectively.

2.  Olefin

  • Olefin is a recyclable polymer that is sometimes used in carpeting.  One downside to this material is that it is flammable and will melt if exposed to high heat.

3. Polyester

  • Polyester carpet tends to be less expensive than Nylon, but it has a tendency to become matted and, thus, does not have as long of a lifespan as nylon.

4. Acrylic

  • While this fiber is falling out of popularity due to a short lifespan, it is sometimes used in bathrooms for its quick drying capabilities.

5. Wool

  • Wool is sometimes hailed as a “green” alternative to synthetic fibers because it is renewable, biodegradable, and fire-resistant.  Wool carpet fiber is also odor-reducing.

Whatever fiber you choose, the more durable piece of carpet will be the one with the greater number of fibers per square foot with about five twists per inch—your carpet store professional will know this information and can help you make the best carpet purchase decision.  Also important is the feel of the carpet—you will be the one walking on it, after all!  Test the carpet with bare feet because this will be a purchase that sticks around your home for a while.
