How to Clean Hardwood Floors

Hardwood floors can make a beautiful addition to almost any room in your house. In addition to being aesthetically pleasing, they can increase the value of your home if you ever decide to sell. Hardwood floors work well with many different styles of decorating, from contemporary to retro or transitional. Because hardwood floors are made of natural materials, they do require special attention when you are cleaning and caring for them. When you take great care of your hardwood floors, they will last you for a long time to come. Read on for tips on how to clean hardwood floors.

The Basics
Taking steps to keep as much dirt as possible off of your hardwood floors will make cleaning much easier. You can lay mats at entry points and encourage your guests to remove their shoes when they enter your home. Dust and dirt will accumulate even with these measures, of course, so keep a mop with a dusting agent handy to remove dust, dirt, pet hair, and more from the floor’s surface. Vacuum your floors at least every week using the floor brush attachment. Take care to not use your vacuum’s carpet setting, as that could scratch your hardwood floors.

Deep Cleaning
Weekly mopping and vacuuming will help your floors stay clean, but they can’t remove everything. Deep clean your hardwood floors two or three times a year by using a special hardwood cleaner and a sponge or rag mop. This will help remove the dirt, oil, and gunk that build up and aren’t affected by vacuuming. Don’t leave any standing water on the floor when you’re done mopping, as this can soak into your floors and cause warping, bowing, or other damage. You can use a box fan or ceiling fan to make the drying process go even quicker.
