Beat Common Carpet Stains with These Tips

Coffee stain

Even if you’re a clean and conscientious homeowner, there’s a high probability that you’re going to see some carpet stains at some point. Though kids are often behind carpet stains, adults have been known to tip over a wine glass or two. If something spills on your carpet, don’t panic; with a few simple tips, you can make sure your beautiful carpet remains spotless.

Put Down Throw Rugs

The best way to beat carpet stains is to prevent them from happening in the first place. In addition to putting down welcome mats inside and outside your exterior doors, consider placing throw rugs in strategic places throughout your home. Another good idea is to institute a “no-shoes” policy, and make sure your guests have plenty of sturdy surfaces for their drinks. A few preventative measures can vastly reduce the number of stains and spills.

Blot, Don’t Scrub

When cleaning most surfaces, your first instinct might be to scrub until the offending debris is gone. Unfortunately, scrubbing a carpet stain will only cause the stain to spread over a wider surface area and sink deeper into the carpet’s fibers. Instead of scrubbing, soak up as much liquid as possible by blotting the spill with a paper towel. Then, blot the spill with a damp cloth towel until the stain is gone.

Use Household Products

Of course, blotting alone will not remove the stain from your carpet. Depending on the stain, you should use one or more common household products. For example, if there’s a red wine stain on your carpet, consider using white wine to remove it. Hydrogen peroxide, dish soap, vinegar, and baking soda are great for getting out ink, pet stains, fruit juice, and other kinds of stains.

Another good way to prevent stains is to purchase an elegant carpet that is resistant to spills.
