Covering Your Windows with Curtains

classic window

Curtains are an important and significant part of your room because of the style and function they bring to a room. Choosing curtains is as big of a task as choosing the carpet is. Here is a guide to covering your windows with curtains.

Measure

Before you can purchase curtains, you must figure out how big they should be. Start by measuring from the top of the widow down to the floor. To get a traditional look, add a few inches to allow the curtains to fall into a graceful pool on the floor. If you want your curtains to rise about your windows, add six or more inches to the length. For width, measure the width of the window. Add between four and eight inches to each side, then double the total width. The width must be doubled to give your curtains the fall and drape you want.

Fabric

Decide what kind of material you want your curtains to be made of. The fabric determines how well curtains block light and heat or cold, how they fall and drape, and how well they hold up over time. Linen, silk, faux silk, and velvet are good choices, but keep in mind silk fades in sunlight. Unlined silk also rots, so faux silk is a good alternative. Hold a swatch of fabric up to a window to see how it falls, and consider how it will drape around your widow.

Custom or Store-Bought

Another choice to make when considering curtains is whether you want custom curtains or will purchase them off the shelf. There are advantages to both. Store-bought curtains are more affordable, but custom curtains can be tailored to meet all your needs. The exact size, color, and fabric you want is exactly what you'll get.
